Ecossais né en 1958 à Edimbourg, Irvine Welsh abandonne l'école à 16 ans et enchaîne les petits boulots. Best-seller mondial, son premier roman Trainspotting est adapté au théâtre puis au cinéma en 1996 par Danny Boyle et devient un film culte dans le monde entier. Welsh y fait une apparition dans le rôle d'un dealer aux côtés d'Ewan McGregor. Son oeuvre a été récompensée par deux prix : Le Scottish Arts Council Book Award en 1994 pour Trainspotting et le Saltire Society Scottish Book of the Year Award en 2002 pour Porno.
